The Secretary to Government of the Federation in the immediate past administration, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has denied reports that he is sponsoring pro-Biafra protests in some parts of the country, saying any claim to the contrary is the handiwork of detractors.
Some youths, under the banner of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra(MASSOB), have in the past few weeks been staging mass protests in the South East over the Federal Government’s continued incarceration of the Executive Director of Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.
Following the security dimension of the Pro-Biafra agitations, which has grounded economic and business activities in most of the South East, an online news platform (not NGTrends) reported that Mr. Anyim, a former Senate president, has been placed under security watch for financing the activities of outlawed Radio Biafra as well as the secession protests.
The reports also claim that the immediate past SGF took unspecified but huge sums of money from the coffers of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, part of which he is purportedly using to fund the pro-Biafra agitations.
A statement signed by his spokesman Sam Nwaobasi on Thursday in Abuja and made available to reporters, said “We find it despicable that some people have taken it upon themselves to disparage, embarrass, ridicule, insult and indeed incite the public against Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, since he left office as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, through publication of bare-faced lies, fabrication of baseless stories and peddling of rumours on phantom issues that make no meaning or sense”.
“We have resisted the temptation to join issues with these gangs of debased characters. However, there is a limit to what can be ignored”, Nwaobasi said.
The statement insisted that “Sen. Anyim is not sponsoring, has not sponsored and will never sponsor any protest by any group against the Government or our dear country Nigeria”.
It also added that “Senator Anyim is not under any investigation for any such allegation”, warning those behind what it termed as dastardly and mischievous acts, to desist forthwith.
“They must bear in mind that those who rise up against an innocent person are only setting themselves up for a fatal fall”, the statement warned.
